...I don't think the point of Happiness is that it lasts forever. The idea that it always ends is not some deep revelation, anyone who has thought about mortality for like 5 minutes has figured that out. The end is not the goal, the experience is. The shared moments and the memories you make that can sustain you even after the person who shared them with you is gone. Death defines life, but it's not the goal. Life is for living.

I notice strong parallels between the Fear Hole and the Bad Place. It's the worst torment that a human can experience, that exploits fear of _itself_ to manipulate the victim, and hence only works if the victim _doesn't know_ it's happening. It might be my favourite evil trope. I get why it isn't done more: it can't accomplish any _practical_ purpose except misery, which pretty strongly constrains the motive of the villain.
